The herd
The herd

Django
A curious and magical spirit
Django is a 5-year-old pedigree Criollo. He was pulled as a full fire blooded green Stallion on his way to the slaughterhouse. We paid $160 for this incredible boy. No one was taking him.
One of the most curious and magical spirits. Django is father to Tormenta. He is gelded, fat, free and happy.

Malachai
A gentle wise giant
Distinguished Malachai – one of our older orphans. He is in his mid 20’s and was pulled from auction in January 2023 en route to the slaughterhouse. He probably cost too much to feed as he’s a very big boy. Malachai is a gentle, wise giant and boss of everyone. He stands for no nonsense.
Malachai needs lots of food and vitamin supplementation as his teeth are not great. He is best friends with Atlas.

Iggy
Growing in confidence
Iggy is the best friend of Sassy – they are inseparable. He is 6 months old and hugely mistrusting of humans. He was ripped from his mother who was sent to slaughter for meat. Iggy was left to die with the other foals in January 2023. We took them all.
He grows more confident but is hugely traumatized. Iggy needs alfalfa supplementation for the first year of his life for growth, and will require surgery for castration down the line.

Meadow
Growing beauty
Meadow was one of 6 desperate cases from the hoarder rescue in February 2023. She was left to starve only eating garbage.
Meadow arrived half-dead, malnourished, with parasites and dehydrated. It’s a miracle she’s alive, as is her daughter Blossom.
Slowly, slowly, with dewormer, vitamins, alfalfa and natural forage. This beauty is coming around.

Tormenta
Little Storm
Tormenta was born February 2023 on the night of a tremendous storm. She is the daughter of Gaia and Django.
At 4 months old, Tormenta is a giant of a baby girl and the only horse at the orphanage so far who will be raised with both mother and father present her entire life. A full family living together wild is a rarity. As a result she only knows wholeness. Watch this little lady soar.

Balu
Best friend of Mowgli
Balu is 5 months old now and was pulled from auction at only 2 weeks old we estimate. He was ripped from his mother who was sold for meat the same day. It a miracle he’s alive.
Without his mother’s milk or any substitution milk, which he refused, his growth has been stunted and his confidence blown. Best friend of Mowgli, he’s sustained on alfalfa, grass and lots of love. Every day he gets stronger, but a true orphan and victim of this vile system.

Atlas
The oldest and wisest
Atlas is the oldest and wisest – up in his late 20’s. Mr Atlas with his front teeth missing was pulled en route to the slaughterhouse in January 2023.
After a life of slavery, he’s been almost numbed out by human brutality, Every day, as he trusts his freedom and feels the love, he shows us gradually the stoic and gentle soul he truly is.

Mouse
Deeply affectionate
Mouse is aged 2/3, and she was one of the hoarder rescues. All she knows is garbage to eat and concrete and faeces to walk on.
Deeply affectionate, and now with some weight on her, she’s turning into a really well-adjusted little lady. We just need to keep the weight on her as starvation cases can often slip.

Blossom
Daughter of Meadow
Little Blossom is the daughter of Meadow at 1 year old. She is another absolute miracle from the hoarder rescue.
Blossom was one of the worst. Malnourished and loaded with parasites. If we hadn’t taken her feeding very slowly with good quality alfalfa she wouldn’t have made it. Will need sustaining for another 6 months until she’d over the hump. Meadow loves her cuddles.

Puck
Best friend to Juniper
Puck is aged 3 and was pulled from auction en route to the slaughterhouse. He is completely wild and feral hence his name.
Puck has been an extraordinary example of how horses find their equilibrium with the land as his medicine. Once castrated and dewormed he found his groove. Best friend to Juniper but will always be a little lost boy as we fear he never knew his mother.

Bodhisattva
A healer and a warrior
Bodhi is aged 6 and is best friend to Johnny.
After spending his first year and a half alone to fend for himself his comeback and revival are phenomenal. A pure example of tenacious adaptability and intuition. Bodhi is the purest example of true free spirt. A healer and a warrior.

Cloud
Protector of all
Originally named Oriental, Cloud is 8 years old. He came from a neighbour who could no longer afford to take care of the horses they bought. He was given the worst taming so hates all suggestion of saddle or bridal.
Now Cloud is Echos boyfriend and protector of all. Gallant and determined. Sir Cloud.

Gabriel
Smart as a whip
Gabriel is aged 6, smart as a whip and takes no prisoners. He was worked very hard in his short life as he absolutely hates the sight of a saddle. Probably too spirited for most, and would have made good money for meat, otherwise one of the strongest and feistiest horses of the lot.
Godfather and protector to Balu and Mowgli in their first weeks, hence the name.

Princess Bob
The protector
Bob originally belonged to a neighbour who had tamed him the traditional Gaucho way, tied to a pole, and used him for hard work in the fields. We bought him and let him free. He absolutely hated humans. Hugely sensitive and highly protective of Kali and Echo, whose side he has never left since he’s lived free with the herd. Bob generally has the final word on everything. After a lot of love and patience and Debussy, he’s the only horse I partner with bit-free to go on search missions for missing kids. Because he lets me…

Echo
Confident and curious
Echo is daughter of Kali and is now 3 years old. She is the product of a stallion that was released onto the land without permission. Shes a pure Arabian born into pure love and been by her mothers side since birth.
She’s only known safety and love her whole life and as a result is the essence of what an unbroken horse looks and feels like. Alive, confident, dynamic and curious. The ultimate gift of light for her mama and us all.

Kali
Queen of queens
Mother of Echo and expecting Django’s baby. True to her namesake, the Hindu goddess Kali, she is here to behead ego. She stands no nonsense and calls all the shots. Kali was the very first horse here on the land, was being tortured and tied to poles by a gaucho/casero and about to be traded for car parts. Initially full of disdain for humans she is now the most extraordinary matriarch and discerning being. Everything with her is earned, but by her becoming a mother and by granting her autonomy, her gratitude is palpable in her grace.

Gaia
mother of all
As her name suggests she is the mother of all, but more recently to baby Tormenta. Her doppelgänger.
A Rodeo slave all her life, 14 years old and still full of fury for humans, and while grounded and majestic she perpetually has the undercurrent of a terrified little girl running through her. Even after a year and a half, she’s still not quite forgiven humankind. And she may never yet.

Lagertha
Viking warrior
Viking warrior, midget princess. One of the hoarder rescues, she arrived pregnant and with hooves like giant clogs from standing in her own excrement for so many years. Will break into anything to get at food as she was accustomed to eating dog kibble and laundry in her past life. Tough little lady. Takes no prisoners.

Sailor
stoic little chap
4 years old and one of the 6 hoarder rescues arrived emaciated in Jan ‘23. He was an intact stallion so endured his prior situation better than his friends. Likely the father to Lagertha’s unborn baby, he’s a stoic little chap who fights for his food and defends his friends. Toughest of the little lot.

Mowgli
Heartbreaker
6 months old now, Mowgli is one of the real heartbreakers. Separated from his mother at auction as she was sold for meat for human consumption while he and his 3 orphan baby friends all cried out. A brutal start to life. Refusing all milk substitutes he finally took to alfalfa. Best friend to Balu, both could have easily died. Once big enough they will live permanently with the herd. For now, they remain in the nursery getting an awful lot of love, being fed alfalfa three times a day.
